Our hub for Rajasthan: every ride and drive from Jaipur and Udaipur, with distances, bike-or-car advice, seasons and where to book.

Rajasthan Self-Drive Car and Bike Rental Guide: Every Route from Jaipur and Udaipur

For Rajasthan, Hire N Ride has two bases: Jaipur, with both self-drive cars and bikes, and Udaipur, with self-drive cars. From Jaipur you can ride to Amer, Nahargarh, Galta Ji, Sambhar and the block-printing towns, or drive to Pushkar, Abhaneri, Ranthambore, Keoladeo and Shekhawati. From Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh, Chittorgarh and Jaisamand are each a day's drive. This guide links every Rajasthan route we have published, sorted by base and by trip length.

Rajasthan rewards an early start. Forts open to crowds by mid-morning, and in the warmer months the afternoons are hot, so most of our plans have you leave the city at or before sunrise and be back by evening. October to March is the comfortable season for long drives, and the guides below note where seasons or reopenings matter. Every distance and timing on this page is taken from the linked guide, which has the full route, entry details and the sources we checked, so open the guide before you set out.

Getting started in Jaipur

If you are new to renting in the Pink City, our guide to self-drive car rental in Jaipur introduces the cars available, from the Mahindra Thar to the Land Rover Defender. Families and groups should read why a Scorpio suits family and group trips from Jaipur, which compares space and comfort on longer highway days. For two wheels, exploring Jaipur on a rental bike covers Royal Enfields and scooters, and whether a bike is better than a car for Jaipur sightseeing compares parking and hill climbs at Amer, Nahargarh and Hawa Mahal.

Half days and mornings by bike from Jaipur

Jaipur's ridges are best on two wheels in the cool hours. The ride to Amer and Nahargarh puts Amer about 11 km out and adds the ridge views above the old city. For a quieter start, riding east to Galta Ji before Amer's gates fill pairs the kund stairs with Sisodia Rani Ka Bagh. The morning ride to Sambhar Salt Lake runs about 72 km west to the salt flats, the Shakambhari temple and Devyani. Craft lovers can follow the block-printing ride to Sanganer and Bagru, a loop of about 80 km past printers, papermakers and the Sanghiji temple. During the festival season, our Jaipur Navratri bike routes cover old-city tips, parking and documents.

Day drives from Jaipur

Several of Rajasthan's best stepwells, forts and parks are within a day's drive. The drive to Chand Baori at Abhaneri is about 90 km via Dausa, best in morning light on its 3,500 steps. Leaving before dawn for Keoladeo explains why an early NH21 start matters for the migratory birds. Painted havelis are the draw in the Shekhawati drive to Nawalgarh, Dundlod and Mandawa, now on UNESCO's Tentative List. For a monsoon visit, Jaipur in monsoon by rental car covers Amber Fort, Nahargarh and Jal Mahal when the hills turn green, and our October car day-trip guide for Jaipur groups Amer, Pushkar and Pink City loops.

Overnights from Jaipur

Some trips are better with a night away. Our Pushkar overnight plan explains why a same-day return feels rushed on a route of about 145 km via NH48 and the Ajmer hill pass. For tigers, the Ranthambore drive explains that your car takes you south while a park Gypsy or canter takes you into the core zones, with permits and safari slots booked separately.

Udaipur and the Mewar forts

Udaipur is the base for southern Rajasthan. The Kumbhalgarh fort route covers the drive to the great wall in daylight, with parking and route notes. The Chittorgarh day runs about 120 km on NH27 to the seven gates, Vijay Stambh, Gaumukh and Padmini's palace. Closer to the city, the Jaisamand drive is about 54 km to the 1691 marble dam, the Hawa Mahal on its bank and Jagat's 10th-century temple.

How to plan a Rajasthan week

Three days in Jaipur: spend one morning on Amer and Nahargarh by bike, a second on Galta Ji or Sanganer, and use a car on the third day for Abhaneri or Shekhawati.

Five days: add a Pushkar overnight or a Ranthambore safari night to the Jaipur days.

A week across both bases: do Jaipur first, then take a train or flight to Udaipur and rent a car there for Kumbhalgarh, Chittorgarh and Jaisamand on separate days.

Seasons, festivals and wildlife windows

Festivals: Sharad Navratri ran from 11 to 19 October 2026 and Dussehra fell on 20 October, with Diwali on Sunday, 8 November. Garba grounds and Ravan Dahan venues tighten parking after dusk, so a scooter is the easier way around the old city on festival evenings.

Birds: Keoladeo, the former Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is a compact wetland of about 29 square kilometres and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Bird activity peaks in cool morning light, which is why our guide has you leave Jaipur before dawn. Sambhar, India's largest inland salt lake, has been a Ramsar wetland since 1990 and draws winter birds to its flats.

Safaris: Ranthambore's core zones reopened on 1 October 2026. Near Udaipur, jeep safaris in Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary restarted on 1 October, with a morning slot from 6 to 9 am and an afternoon slot from 4 to 7 pm, according to Udaipur Times.

Heritage news: the Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati were submitted to UNESCO's Tentative List on 1 June 2026, a first step towards a nomination rather than World Heritage status, and a good reason to see Nawalgarh, Dundlod and Mandawa now.

Kilometre limits and timing

Rental listings come with a daily kilometre allowance, so check it against your route before you book. Our Shekhawati guide notes that Jaipur car listings checked in October 2026 included 399 km a day, enough for the roughly 370 km haveli loop if you skip big detours, and the Sanganer guide notes that the lowest-priced scooter on the Jaipur page then included 120 km a day, comfortably more than the 80 km block-printing loop. For long days, leave Jaipur by about 6:30 am; in late October the sun sets in Mandawa just before 6 pm and at Chittorgarh a little after 6 pm.

Questions riders and drivers ask

Is a bike or a car better for Jaipur sightseeing?

A bike is better for the old city, Amer, Nahargarh and Galta Ji, where lanes are narrow and parking is tight. A car is better for families, luggage, midday heat and anything beyond about 80 km.

Can I drive my rental car into Ranthambore?

No. Your car gets you from Jaipur to Sawai Madhopur and your hotel; the safari inside the zones is in a park Gypsy or canter booked separately.

Is Pushkar a day trip from Jaipur?

It can be, but at about 145 km each way the lake walks and temple visits feel rushed. Our guide recommends one night in Pushkar.

What is the best base for Kumbhalgarh and Chittorgarh?

Udaipur. Both are full-day drives from the city, and Jaisamand is close enough for a half day.

Practical tips for driving and riding in Rajasthan

  • Carry your original driving licence and a government photo ID for pickup; police checks are common on highways.
  • Start long drives at dawn, carry water, and plan fuel before rural stretches.
  • Fort roads are steep and narrow. Park where staff direct you and walk the last stretch.
  • Helmets are compulsory for rider and pillion on two-wheelers.
  • Check monument and park opening days before you set out; several are closed on fixed weekdays or need permits.
  • Compare vehicles and host reviews on Hire N Ride and Zoomcar before peak weekends and festivals.
