In Uttarakhand, Hire N Ride has three bases close together: Dehradun for self-drive cars and bikes, Mussoorie for bikes on the ridge, and Rishikesh for bikes along the Ganga. Mussoorie is about 35 km above Dehradun, Haridwar about 50 to 55 km south-east, and Rishikesh sits between them on the river, so one trip can cover hill station, river town and forest. This guide links every Uttarakhand ride and drive we have published, grouped by base.
Use Dehradun if you want a car for longer drives to Chakrata, Corbett or Asan Barrage; use Mussoorie if you want short bike rides on the ridge with parking you can actually find; and use Rishikesh if your days revolve around the river, sunrise temples and the road up to Devprayag. Every distance below comes from the linked guide, which has the full route and timings.
Dehradun: the car base for the Doon valley
Start with our October self-drive guide for Dehradun, which lays out four day-drive patterns: Mussoorie and Landour, Rishikesh, Robber's Cave and the Haridwar evening. The most common question is the climb to the hills, answered in how far Mussoorie is from Dehradun by car: about 35 km and one to 1.5 hours up Rajpur Road, with parking near Library Chowk. For an evening by the river, the Haridwar Ganga aarti drive covers the Doiwala route, Har Ki Pauri parking and aarti timing.
Further out, the drive to Chakrata via Kalsi passes the boulder carrying Ashoka's rock edicts before climbing into deodar forest and Tiger Falls; plan roughly three hours each way. The Asan Barrage drive takes you to Uttarakhand's Ramsar wetland as the ruddy shelducks arrive, with Paonta Sahib about 6 km beyond. For wildlife, our overnight Corbett plan from Dehradun explains Bijrani's mid-October opening, the Ramnagar night and the official gypsy rules. Culture fans can time a visit for Virasat, the heritage festival at the Himalayan Cultural Centre in Kaulagarh, using our Virasat self-drive guide, which lists the 23 October to 6 November 2026 dates.
On two wheels, the Dehradun caves and springs bike loop links Tapkeshwar's cave temple, a wade through Robber's Cave and the sulphur pools of Sahastradhara in about 43 to 45 km, four to five hours with stops. Riding time alone is around an hour, and you will get your feet wet in the shallow stream at Robber's Cave, so wear sandals or carry a spare pair of socks.
Mussoorie: bikes on the ridge
Mussoorie's Mall Road is about 2 km between Library and Picture Palace, and parking is the main challenge, so a bike makes the town easier. Our October Winterline ride guide explains when to watch the Winterline, which tourism listings say runs from mid-October into January, and covers Landour cafes and ridge roads. The Library Chowk to Char Dukan afternoon shows how to park once and walk, with Landour about 4 km uphill from the centre. On the quieter west side, the ride to Cloud's End and the Benog sanctuary is about 7 km from Library Chowk by map.
For bigger days, the Surkanda Devi ride runs about 36 km past Dhanaulti to Kaddukhal, where you take the ropeway or walk up to the 2,750 m shrine. Pilgrims riding to the source of the Yamuna should read our Yamunotri ride via Kempty and Barkot, which covers the Janki Chatti trek and yatra registration before the shrine closes for winter. If you would rather drive, our Mussoorie car day-trip guide covers Winterline sunsets, Landour, Kempty Falls and Dhanaulti with parking tips.
Rishikesh: rides along the Ganga
Our October day-ride guide for Rishikesh covers Laxman Jhula, Kunjapuri, Neelkanth and Haridwar. The Tapovan to Neer Garh half day parks once in Tapovan for both Jhula walks, then rides about 6 km to the Neer Garh falls. For sunrise, the Kunjapuri ride explains the Narendranagar timing and why you need a torch for the steps. The longest ride is the morning to Devprayag, about 70 to 75 km up NH-7 past Shivpuri and Kaudiyala to the sangam where the Ganga takes its name; check landslide spots before you leave.
Rishikesh is compact, and most of its sights sit within a few kilometres of Tapovan, so a scooter is enough for the town and the Jhulas. Choose a bigger bike for Kunjapuri and Devprayag, where the road climbs steadily and you will want steady power and good brakes on the way back down. Haridwar is close enough that many riders pair a Rishikesh morning with the evening aarti there.

Planning a few days
A weekend: base in Dehradun. Do the caves and springs loop on a bike in the morning, then drive up to Mussoorie for the evening light. Use day two for Haridwar's aarti or Rishikesh.
Four days: split between Mussoorie and Rishikesh. Spend two days on the ridge with Landour, Cloud's End and Surkanda Devi, then two by the river with Kunjapuri at sunrise and the Devprayag ride.
A week: add Chakrata or Asan Barrage from Dehradun, or an overnight at Corbett once Bijrani has opened for the season.
Bike or car, trip by trip
| Trip | Better on | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mall Road, Landour, Cloud's End | Bike or scooter | Steep lanes and very limited parking near the Mall |
| Tapkeshwar, Robber's Cave, Sahastradhara | Bike | Short legs, easy stops, about an hour of riding in total |
| Jhulas, Neer Garh, Kunjapuri | Bike | Narrow riverside roads and early starts |
| Haridwar aarti | Car | Evening return on a busy highway; parking near Har Ki Pauri |
| Chakrata, Asan Barrage, Corbett | Car | Long days, hill climbs or an overnight stay |
| Yamunotri via Barkot | Bike for experienced riders | Long mountain ride with a trek at the end |
Dates worth planning around in 2026
- Bijrani, Corbett: opened on 15 October, according to our Corbett guide.
- Virasat, Dehradun: 23 October to 6 November at the Himalayan Cultural Centre, Kaulagarh, with evening programmes.
- Yamunotri: the shrine shuts for winter on 11 November, so the ride has to be done before then.
- Winterline, Mussoorie: clear evenings from mid-October into January.
- Asan Barrage: the first ruddy shelducks of the winter were back at the wetland in October.
Parking notes by town
Mussoorie: park once near Library Chowk or on the Kulri side and walk the Mall; Camel's Back Road is a pedestrian stretch of about 3 km. Rishikesh: park in Tapovan and walk to both Jhulas, since the bridges and lanes around them are for walkers. Haridwar: use the lots near Har Ki Pauri listed in our aarti guide and arrive early, because the ghats fill before the evening ceremony. Kunjapuri: leave the bike at the road head and climb the steps with a torch if you are there before sunrise.
Seasons and timing
Post-monsoon October and November bring clearer skies and cool air in the hills, which is why most of our Uttarakhand guides were written for that window. Winterline evenings in Mussoorie are sharpest in November and December. Mountain roads after the rains can still have landslide-prone stretches, especially on NH-7 towards Devprayag, so check local updates on the morning you ride. Yamunotri closes for the winter in November, and Corbett's zones open in phases, so check the dates in the linked guides before planning around them.
Questions travellers ask
Should I rent in Dehradun or Mussoorie?
Rent a car in Dehradun if you plan longer drives or are travelling with family. Rent a bike in Mussoorie if you are staying on the ridge, because parking near Mall Road is limited and a bike lets you park once and walk.
Can I ride from Rishikesh to Devprayag and back in a day?
Yes. At about 70 to 75 km each way it is a full morning, and our guide recommends returning before dark and checking landslide spots first.
Can I drive my own rental car into Corbett?
Our Corbett guide explains the official gypsy rules: you drive to Ramnagar and stay overnight, and the safari is in an authorised vehicle.
