For a Himachal trip with Hire N Ride, base yourself in Manali for the Solang, Atal Tunnel, Sissu and Naggar side of the valley, in Kasol for the Parvati Valley, and in Bhuntar if you fly into Kullu-Manali Airport or want Tirthan, Jalori and Prashar Lake. This guide brings together every Himachal ride and drive we have published, grouped by base, so you can pick a route, choose between a bike and a car, and book from the right city page.
Bikes dominate the upper Kullu valley, because parking is easier and the narrow village roads suit two wheels, but self-drive cars make sense for families and for the longer runs to Lahaul. Use the sections below in order: pick your base, then your season, then the rides that match the days you have. Each linked guide has the detailed route, distances, timings and tips, so this page works as the map and the guides as the turn-by-turn notes. Distances quoted here come from those guides; always confirm road conditions locally before a high-altitude ride.
Manali: the base for the upper Beas valley
Manali has the widest choice of bikes, scooters and cars, and most of our Himachal guides start here. If this is your first trip, read our complete Manali bike rental guide for an overview of bikes, routes and costs, then how to book a bike rental in Manali in advance so you are not hunting for a bike on arrival. Beginners should also go through the four rental mistakes first-time riders make in Manali, and solo women riders will find practical answers in our guide to riding solo in Manali. If you are still deciding how to book, how a bike rental app can save your Manali trip explains what changes when the price and bike are fixed before you travel.
Choosing the right bike
The choice in Manali usually comes down to two Royal Enfields. Renting a Royal Enfield Himalayan in Manali makes sense for Rohtang, Spiti, Leh and rough roads, thanks to its ground clearance and long-travel suspension, while our Classic 350 guide explains when the more relaxed cruiser is enough. Riders weighing a road trip on their own motorcycle should read bring your own bike vs rent in Manali, and anyone torn between two wheels and four can compare comfort, cost and convenience in car vs bike rental for a Himalayan trip.
Day rides from Manali
Start with the top ten scenic routes around Manali and why Manali is a biker's paradise for the big picture. The single most searched ride is Manali to Sissu: about 40 to 42 km and roughly 1.5 hours one way through the Atal Tunnel, covered stop by stop in our Manali to Sissu bike guide. For quieter corners, seven offbeat places near Manali you can reach by bike runs from Sethan to Gulaba, and parking at Vashisht and walking to Jogini Falls turns a short ride of about 3 km into an easy morning. Our October day-ride guide for Manali groups Solang, Naggar, the Atal Tunnel and Kasol into separate day plans.
Once snow returns to the passes, planning a Manali bike ride around the snow explains where police barriers go up, what to know about Rohtang and Hamta, and lower rides for snow days. Winter riders should also read whether a winter bike ride in Manali is possible before committing to dates.
Self-drive cars from Manali
For four wheels, begin with documents, deposits and insurance for self-drive car rental in Manali and what to expect from a premium Hire N Ride car. Solang Valley is about 14 km from Manali, 30 to 45 minutes by car, as set out in how far Solang Valley is from Manali. On the left bank of the Beas, Naggar Castle is about 22 km away; our Naggar castle drive keeps it to a half day, while the left-bank drive past Jagatsukh and the Roerich estate fills a full day with temples, the gallery and Tripura Sundari. Our October car day-trip guide for Manali covers Solang, the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, Naggar and Kasol. For Lahaul after the first snow, whether Keylong is still a day drive from Manali walks through Sissu, Gondhla, Tandi and the Kardang and Shashur monasteries.
Kullu Dussehra and the festival season
The International Kullu Dussehra 2026 runs from 21 to 27 October at Dhalpur in Kullu town, and it is the biggest week of the year in the valley. Our Kullu Dussehra guide covers the dates, the drone show nights, parking, and why a bike from Manali, Bhuntar or Kasol is easier than a car during festival week.
Kasol: the base for the Parvati Valley
Kasol sits at about 1,580 m and is the most practical base in the Parvati Valley. If you are choosing where to stay, Kasol vs Tosh vs Malana compares the three on roads, height and which bike to rent. Our self-drive bike guide to Kasol covers places to visit and riding tips, and the Parvati Valley route to Manikaran explains the short ride to the hot springs and gurudwara. To reach the road end, riding from Kasol to Barshaini is about 16 km, after which you walk on to Kalga, Pulga or the Kheerganga trail. For a quieter half day, crossing the Parvati to Chalal uses a footbridge and a riverside trail from the market.
Bhuntar: the airport base for the lower valley
Bhuntar is next to Kullu-Manali Airport and at the turn into the Parvati Valley. First-time renters should read documents, deposits and don'ts for Bhuntar bike rental. Whether to rent in Bhuntar for Kasol and Jalori Pass sets out the distances, with Kasol about 35 km away. The Bijli Mahadev ride-and-walk day goes via Kullu to the Chansari road head and a walk of about 3 km to the 2,460 m temple. Leave the highway near Aut for the Banjar road to Tirthan and Jibhi, or climb past Bajaura's stone temple for the ride up to Prashar Lake and its floating island.
Beyond Himachal: Manali to Leh
Many riders use Manali as the start of a longer Himalayan trip. Our Manali to Leh peak-season renting tips explain why June bookings go early, and ten safety tips for riding at high altitude in Leh Ladakh cover acclimatisation and choosing a bike. When you are ready to book that leg, see bike rental in Leh Ladakh.
When to go
Our season-by-season guide to visiting Manali is the place to start. In short, the summer months are busiest and bikes book out early, the post-monsoon weeks bring clear skies and the festival, and from late autumn snow begins to shape which high roads stay open. Whatever the month, check the Lahaul-Spiti road status on the morning you ride beyond the Atal Tunnel. If you are driving on to Spiti this late in the season, our Manali to Spiti by car guide for late October explains why Kunzum may be open but a Kinnaur exit is the safer plan.
How many days you need
Two days: stay in Manali. Spend the first morning at Vashisht and Jogini, then ride to Solang in the afternoon. On the second day, leave by 8 or 9 AM for the Atal Tunnel and Sissu and be back in Manali in the afternoon.
Four days: add the Parvati Valley. Ride down the valley to Kasol on day three, which our Kasol guide puts at about 75 to 80 km from Manali via Kullu and Bhuntar, then use day four for Manikaran or the Barshaini road end before returning.
A week: split the trip between Manali and Bhuntar. From Bhuntar you can do Bijli Mahadev, Prashar Lake and the Banjar road to Tirthan and Jibhi on separate days, each short enough to finish before dark.
Bike or car, route by route
