Chandigarh and Punjab Car and Bike Rental Guide: Every Route from Chandigarh and Amritsar

For Chandigarh and Punjab, Hire N Ride has self-drive cars and bikes in Chandigarh and self-drive cars in Amritsar. From Chandigarh you can be in Kasauli, Morni Hills, Pinjore, Dagshai, Anandpur Sahib or Sirhind within a day, and Amritsar's Golden Temple and the Attari border fit into one well-timed car day. This guide brings every Chandigarh and Punjab route we have published together, grouped by trip type, so you can choose a plan and book from the right city page.

Chandigarh is one of the easiest cities in India to drive in, with wide sector roads and roundabouts, and it sits at the foot of the Shivaliks, so hill drives start within half an hour. Amritsar is a different kind of trip: a temple morning, a museum or two, and a border ceremony in the evening. Every distance below comes from the linked guide, which has the full route, timings and the sources we checked, so open it before you set out.

Getting started in Chandigarh

New to self-drive in the city? Our introduction to self-drive car rental in Chandigarh explains how renting works and why it beats juggling cabs, and why car rental is the smartest way to travel in Chandigarh makes the case for four wheels in the City Beautiful. Before you set off, read common mistakes to avoid when driving in Chandigarh, which covers roundabouts, parking and the basics of renting. For two wheels, our October bike day-ride guide groups Kasauli, Morni Hills, Parwanoo and Sukhna Lake into separate rides.

The city itself, by bike

Chandigarh was planned by Le Corbusier, and its architecture is best seen slowly. Le Corbusier's Chandigarh at bike speed links the Sector 19 centre, a Capitol Complex tour, Pierre Jeanneret's house and Sukhna Lake at sunset into one day. For a short outing, Pinjore Gardens before lunch turns the terraced gardens, about 22 km away on NH-5, into an easy half day.

Hill drives and rides from Chandigarh

The Shivalik and lower Himalayan hills are the main reason people rent here. Whether one day is enough for Kasauli answers the most common question: about 60 km and 1.5 to 2 hours via NH-5, with parking tips and Mall walks. The Morni Hills drive is about 45 km to Haryana's only hill station, with the Tikkar Taal lakes and the fort museum. Riders can climb further on the Dagshai ride, which takes in the 1849 jail museum, shut on Mondays, and the long railway tunnel at Barog. For a long weekend, our four car trips from Chandigarh compares Morni, Kasauli, Barog and Chail, and the Chandigarh to Shimla, Manali and Kasol road trip lays out the bigger mountain journey with drive times.

Sikh heritage drives from Chandigarh

Two of Punjab's most important heritage areas are within easy reach. The Anandpur Sahib drive covers the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum, Takht Kesgarh Sahib and Kiratpur Sahib, with a reminder that the museum is not a Monday trip. The Sirhind loop runs about 105 km to Sanghol's Kushan-era stones, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rauza Sharif and Aam Khas Bagh.

Amritsar: temple at dawn, border at dusk

Amritsar is built around one perfect day. Harmandir Sahib first, Attari last plans a day that starts at the Golden Temple and ends at the border ceremony, about 31 km from the city, with museum hours on the way. Dawn at the sarovar, dusk at Attari covers the same pairing for a long weekend, including the 5 pm ceremony timing that took effect from 16 October and parking tips near the temple.

Why each trip is worth the drive

Le Corbusier's city. Le Corbusier was born on 6 October 1887, and Chandigarh remains the clearest place in India to see his planning at full scale. The Capitol Complex became part of UNESCO's listing of his architectural work in 2016, which is why our bike guide builds the day around a Capitol Complex tour rather than a quick drive past.

Pinjore. The gardens are also known as Yadavindra Gardens. They suit a free half day when you have already walked Sukhna Lake and do not want to commit to the Kasauli hairpins.

Morni Hills. Haryana Tourism and Wikipedia place the village about 45 km from Chandigarh, or roughly 35 km from Panchkula, close enough for a daylight return with the Tikkar Taal lakes.

Dagshai. About 60 km up the Shimla highway, a narrow road climbs from Kumarhatti to one of the oldest cantonments in Himachal Pradesh. Its stone jail, built in 1849, is now a museum, and one of its cells is linked to Gandhi's visit.

Anandpur Sahib. By map routing it is about 84 km from central Chandigarh to Virasat-e-Khalsa, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes without traffic, and Kiratpur Sahib is about 10 km from the museum. The museum's official site lists it as closed every Monday and on several national holidays and festivals, so check before you go.

Sirhind. Within about 45 km west of Chandigarh you reach three chapters of Punjab's history: carved railings from a Kushan-period Buddhist stupa at Sanghol, about 2,000 years old, the gurdwara at Fatehgarh Sahib, and the Mughal-era Rauza Sharif and Aam Khas Bagh.

Amritsar. The cleanest plan is dawn at the sarovar, an hour at Jallianwala Bagh, and the drive west to Attari before the Beating Retreat. In the winter half of the year the ceremony starts in the late afternoon, so confirm the day's time locally and leave earlier than the 30-minute drive suggests.

Long weekends

Long weekends are when Chandigarh hill roads are busiest. In 2026, Gandhi Jayanti on Friday 2 October created a three-day break from 2 to 4 October, and the Dussehra long weekend ran from 17 to 20 October. On weekends like these, leave the city early, book your car or bike well ahead, and plan a return before the evening traffic builds on the highway back from Parwanoo. In Amritsar, the same weekends bring larger crowds at the Golden Temple and at Attari, so arrive at both earlier than usual.

Weather

The India Meteorological Department declared the monsoon's withdrawal from Chandigarh on 23 September 2026. Our October bike guide notes warm days of around 30 to 33°C in the city with dry spells, and noticeably cooler air once you climb into Solan district towards Kasauli and Dagshai, so carry a light jacket for the hills.

Planning a few days

A weekend in Chandigarh: ride the Le Corbusier sites on day one and finish at Sukhna Lake, then drive to Kasauli or Morni on day two.

Four days: add Dagshai and Barog on a bike, and a Sikh heritage day at Anandpur Sahib or Sirhind.

Amritsar add-on: rent a car in Amritsar for one full day, Golden Temple at dawn and Attari at dusk, with time for museums in between.

Timing tips

Hill drives from Chandigarh fill up on long weekends, so leave early and expect slow traffic on NH-5 near Parwanoo on the return. Check weekly closures before you go: the Dagshai jail museum is shut on Mondays and our Anandpur Sahib guide advises against a Monday visit for Virasat-e-Khalsa. At Attari, arrive well before the ceremony, as seating fills up and the timing changes with the season.

Questions travellers ask

Is Kasauli a day trip from Chandigarh?

Yes. At about 60 km and 1.5 to 2 hours each way, one day covers the Mall and a viewpoint, as our Kasauli guide explains.

Can I see the Golden Temple and Attari in one day?

Yes. Start at the temple early, keep the afternoon for museums or lunch, and drive about 31 km to Attari for the evening ceremony.

Is a bike enough for Chandigarh sightseeing?

For the city, yes. The sectors are flat and parking is easy. Choose a car for families or hill drives with luggage.
