Bhubaneswar Self-Drive Car Rental Guide: Konark, Chilika, Raghurajpur and Ratnagiri

In Odisha, Hire N Ride's base is Bhubaneswar, with self-drive cars for the coast and the countryside around the temple city. Konark's Sun Temple is about 65 km away, the painted village of Raghurajpur about 48 km, Chilika's dolphin boats at Satapada about 107 km, and the Buddhist hills of Lalitgiri, Udayagiri and Ratnagiri make a full day to the north-east. This guide links every Odisha drive we have published, with distances, timing and where to book.

Bhubaneswar sits at the centre of what travellers call Odisha's golden triangle with Puri and Konark, and most of the trips below use the same wide highway towards Puri before branching off. That makes them easy drives on paved roads, where a reliable hatchback or compact sedan is enough. The real planning is about heat and light: open stone monuments and lagoon boats are best in the morning, before the heat and the crowds build. Every distance and date below comes from the linked guide, which has the full route and the sources we checked.

Konark: the Sun Temple

Konark on a Bhubaneswar car day is the classic trip. Wikipedia places Konark about 65 km south-east of Bhubaneswar and about 35 km north-east of Puri on the coast, typically about 90 minutes in ordinary traffic. There are two sensible patterns: direct via Pipli on the signed corridor, or a loop through Puri and the coastal Marine Drive if you also want Jagannath darshan or a beach lunch. Konark has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. It is an open-air monument with little shade on the platforms, which is why guides point to October to February as the comfortable months, with mornings clear enough to read the carvings. Arrive early, park once and give the stone two unhurried hours, with a short stop at Chandrabhaga beach. The Konark Dance Festival, with classical programmes staged in front of the temple, is commonly held from 1 to 5 December.

Hirapur and Raghurajpur: a crafts day

Raghurajpur's painted lanes make a gentle day out. By map routing, Bhubaneswar railway station to the open-air Hirapur Yogini temple is about 9 km, Hirapur to Raghurajpur about 45 km on NH316, the Bhubaneswar to Puri highway, and Raghurajpur back to the station about 48 km. The road passes through Pipili, the appliqué town, about 19 km from the station. Odisha Tourism gives visiting hours of 6 am to 6 pm for the Hirapur temple and 9 am to 6 pm for Raghurajpur, and October to March as the best time to visit both. In Raghurajpur the paintings are on the outside of the houses as well as inside. Artists in the village say cheap digital prints sold as handmade work are their biggest problem, so buy Pattachitra paintings, palm-leaf engravings or painted masks directly from the people who make them.

Chilika: dolphins and three stops on the way

The Chilika dolphin drive turns what sounds like an expedition into a comfortable day. Map routing gives about 107 km from central Bhubaneswar to Satapada; going via Puri is about 62 km to Puri plus about 48 km on. The three stops on the way are Dhauli, a low hill on the Daya river about 8 km south of the city, topped by the white Dhauli Shanti Stupa built by the Japan Buddha Sangha and Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha in 1972; Pipili, about 18 km out on the Puri road; and Puri itself. Chilika is the largest brackish-water lagoon on India's east coast, spreading across Puri, Khordha and Ganjam districts and opening to the Bay of Bengal. In 1981 it became one of the first two Indian wetlands named a Ramsar site, and it holds India's only lagoon population of Irrawaddy dolphins, an endangered species. It supports more than 225 bird species and around 200,000 fisherfolk from over 130 villages, according to Wikipedia. Leave Bhubaneswar by 6:30 am, be on the water by mid-morning and drive the coastal stretch back in daylight. Weekdays are calmer at the Satapada jetty.

The Diamond Triangle: Odisha's Buddhist hills

Ratnagiri, Lalitgiri and Udayagiri fill one long, rewarding day. By map routing it is about 87 km from central Bhubaneswar to Lalitgiri, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes without traffic, then about 10 km on to Udayagiri, about 11 km to Ratnagiri and about 92 km back. According to the Archaeological Survey of India's excavations, Buddhism had an unbroken presence at Lalitgiri for well over a thousand years, and its relic stupa is the centrepiece. Udayagiri, known in old inscriptions as Madhavapura Mahavihara, was active from about the 7th to the 12th century and has a stepped well. Ratnagiri, the "hill of jewels", grew into a major monastery from around the 5th century CE, and its carved stone doorway is among the finest surviving in India. Leave by 7 am, go to the farthest sites in the cool morning and keep the afternoon for the site museum and the drive home. The sites sit far enough apart, and far enough from the main highway, that public transport is slow and patchy, which is exactly where a car helps.

Planning a few days

Two days: Konark via Pipli on day one, with a loop back through Puri's Marine Drive, and Hirapur and Raghurajpur on day two.

Four days: add Chilika with Dhauli on the way, and the Diamond Triangle on a separate day.

Combining trips: Raghurajpur is near Puri, so it pairs naturally with a Puri visit, and Konark is about 35 km from Puri along the coast.

Which trip suits you?

First-time visitors should start with Konark, the best-known monument in the state and an easy morning from the city. Families with children usually enjoy Chilika most: a boat ride, dolphins and the stop at Dhauli on the way. Art and craft lovers will want the Hirapur and Raghurajpur day, where you can watch Pattachitra being painted and buy from the artists. History enthusiasts should keep a full day for the Diamond Triangle, where on a weekday you may have long stretches of a site almost to yourself, walking among brick stupas, stone sculptures and the outlines of monks' cells with paddy fields and village ponds all around.

Road notes

The Bhubaneswar to Puri highway is wide and busy, and Hirapur, Pipili and Raghurajpur are all a short way off it. Allow extra time for city traffic leaving Bhubaneswar and for the stretch near Puri on weekends. The coastal Marine Drive between Puri and Konark is the scenic option. Map time estimates assume clear roads, so add a buffer on every leg. Parking near the Konark complex is ordinary town parking rather than a mountain climb, and the roads on all four trips are paved, so there is no need for a large SUV.

Buying crafts the right way

Raghurajpur is known for Pattachitra painting, Gotipua dance, wood carving and terracotta work, and Pipili for its bright appliqué. If you are buying gifts, choose a painting, a palm-leaf engraving or a painted mask directly from the person who made it, and ask how long a piece took; genuine work takes days or weeks. Carry some cash for small purchases in the villages.

Seasons and timing

October to March is the comfortable season across coastal Odisha. The heavy monsoon is over, fields are still green and the hottest months are far off. October also opens Chilika's tourist season, which runs through to January, and the start of the winter bird migration that makes the lagoon famous later in the season. Summer heat makes long walks on Konark's open platforms unpleasant, so in warmer months go at opening time.

Questions travellers ask

Can I see Konark and Puri in one day from Bhubaneswar?

Yes. Drive to Puri first, then take the Marine Drive about 35 km to Konark, and return via Pipli.

Where do I see the Chilika dolphins?

Our guide uses the boats from Satapada, about 107 km from Bhubaneswar; leave early and go on a weekday if you can.

Is the Diamond Triangle a day trip?

Yes, a long one: about 87 km to Lalitgiri and about 92 km back, with short hops between the three sites.
