Allow 8 Hours for the 240 km Drive from Manali to Dharamshala

By Manjot Kaur · 24 October 2026

Manali to Dharamshala by car is about 240 km and takes 7 to 8 hours with stops. You drive down the Beas valley to Mandi, then north-west on the Mandi to Pathankot highway through Jogindernagar, Baijnath and Palampur, and take the state road from Palampur to Dharamshala. McLeod Ganj is another 6 km up the hill, so leave Manali by 8 am and you will park before sunset, which is at about 5:40 pm in Dharamshala this week.

Below: the route stretch by stretch, how long each part really takes, the road works on the way right now, the weather, where to park in McLeod Ganj, and which car and how many days to rent. Current as of 24 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Distance: about 240 km to Dharamshala if you take the Bajaura to Kataula road to Mandi, or about 250 km if you stay on the NH3 through Aut and Pandoh. Add 6 km for McLeod Ganj.
  • Time: 7 to 8 hours one way with a lunch stop. Map apps show about five and a half hours, but they do not allow for the gorge near Pandoh, the work zones on the Mandi to Pathankot highway or the town traffic in Palampur.
  • Leave by 8 am. That puts you in Dharamshala at about 3:30 to 4 pm, with time to find your hotel and park before dark.
  • Road works: NHAI is resurfacing and patching the Mandi to Pathankot highway after the monsoon, and repairs near Palampur caused long queues in early October. The two roads from Dharamshala up to McLeod Ganj are still being repaired.
  • Weather: IMD Shimla expects isolated rain or snow on 24 and 25 October, then dry weather from 26 to 30 October, with no warnings issued.
  • Parking: space in McLeod Ganj is limited and paid. Book a hotel with parking, or leave the car in lower Dharamshala. The Dharamshala Skyway ropeway is closed for maintenance until 30 October.
  • Cost: Hire N Ride cars in Manali start at Rs 4,299 a day for a Maruti Jimny 4WD with 300 km a day included. A three-day trip covers the round trip of about 500 km with room to spare.

The Manali to Dharamshala route, stretch by stretch

There is one main road. You follow the Beas down past Kullu to Mandi, join the Mandi to Pathankot highway (NH154) and climb through Ghatasani and Jogindernagar into the Kangra valley. At Baijnath and Palampur you are in tea country, and from Palampur the state road (SH17) runs west along the foot of the Dhauladhar to Dharamshala. The only real choice is how you get from Kullu to Mandi.

  • Option A, the highway: stay on the NH3 through Bhuntar, the Aut tunnel and Pandoh. It is wider and busier, with more fuel stations and more help if something goes wrong.
  • Option B, the Kataula road: leave the highway after Bhuntar at Bajaura and cross the hills via Kataula to Mandi. It is about 10 km shorter and map apps often choose it, but it is a narrow district road with steep bends and little room to pass. Use it only in dry weather and daylight, and only if you are used to hill driving.

The distances below come from OpenStreetMap routing from Mall Road, Manali, and are rounded. Your figure will vary with your start point, your hotel and any diversions on the day.

Palampur to Dharamshala on SH1736 kmabout 240 to 251 kmTwo-lane state road through villages, with the Dhauladhar on your right.
Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj6 kmabout 246 to 257 kmSteep, narrow and busy. Both roads up are under repair.

The first 170 km or so, as far as Jogindernagar, is the same road as our Manali to Bir Billing ride, which covers the Kataula road and the Mandi to Jogindernagar works in more detail. If you want a paragliding morning on the way, Bir is only about 15 km from Jogindernagar.

How long the drive really takes

Routing engines put the drive at about five and a half hours. Here is a more realistic split for a car leaving Mall Road at 8 am and taking the NH3:

  1. Manali to Kullu, about 1 hour. Slower than usual while the Kullu Dussehra traffic order is in force.
  2. Kullu to Mandi, 2 to 2.5 hours. The gorge between Aut and Pandoh has single-lane sections, flagmen and slow trucks.
  3. Mandi to Palampur, about 2.5 hours. Around 93 km on the Mandi to Pathankot highway, with a long climb after Mandi and work zones near Ghatasani and Jogindernagar.
  4. Palampur to Dharamshala, about 1 hour. The state road is narrower than the highway and passes through several villages.
  5. Stops, about 1 hour. Lunch in Mandi, which is roughly the halfway point, plus fuel and a short stop at Baijnath or a tea garden.

That puts you in Dharamshala at about 3:30 to 4 pm. If you leave after 11 am, think about breaking the drive at Mandi or Palampur rather than climbing to McLeod Ganj in the dark.

What is happening on the road right now

Every section has some post-monsoon repair work. None of it closes the road, but it adds time.

  • Kullu, festival traffic: the district traffic order for Kullu Dussehra runs from 17 October to 8 November 2026, with diversions and no-parking zones in the town centre. Drive through without stopping in Kullu if you can.
  • Kullu to Mandi: the NH3 still has slope-protection walls, tunnel work and single-lane stretches from the 2025 monsoon damage. Our Chandigarh to Manali drive guide sets out the details for the same stretch. Expect short waits at flagmen.
  • Mandi to Padhar: News18 reported on 7 October 2026 that most of the new 19 km highway between Mandi and Padhar is carrying traffic, with diversions in a few places where NHAI is channelling new water springs and repairing rain damage. NHAI aimed to finish the stretch by the end of October.
  • Ghatasani to Jogindernagar: Amar Ujala reported on 15 October 2026 that NHAI had started tarring the pothole-ridden highway. It said Ghatasani to Urla would be fully resurfaced and Ghatta to Chauntra and Jogindernagar would get patchwork, with the work due to finish in October.
  • Near Palampur: The Tribune reported on 9 October 2026 that NHAI repair work on the highway at Thakurdwara near Palampur was causing frequent jams, especially at peak hours, because underground pipes and cables still had to be shifted. Check traffic on your map app as you approach Palampur.
  • Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj: both roads up the hill, the shorter Khara Danda road through Jogiwara and the NH503 through Forsyth Ganj, were damaged in the monsoon, The Tribune reported in August. NHAI said it would carry out a full upgrade after the rains, and Amar Ujala reported on 26 September that it had started patching potholes near the McLeod Ganj church. Drive up slowly and give way at narrow points.

Weather and daylight this week

The IMD Shimla bulletin for 24 October 2026 says the state was dry over the previous 24 hours. A fresh western disturbance lies over north Pakistan and Jammu, and the forecast shows isolated rain or snow on 24 and 25 October, followed by dry weather from 26 to 30 October. No thunderstorm or other warnings are in place for the week.

  • Manali: a minimum of 7.1°C on 24 October and a high of 21.2°C the day before.
  • Dharamshala: a minimum of 13.6°C on 24 October and a high of 26.0°C the day before.
  • Daylight: sunrise in Manali is at about 6:30 am and sunset in Dharamshala at about 5:40 pm on 24 October, falling to about 5:35 pm by 31 October and 5:30 pm by 7 November.

If it rains on 24 or 25 October, the Kataula road and the climb after Mandi are the places to slow right down. A dry day from 26 October onwards is the better choice for the drive if your dates are flexible.

McLeod Ganj by car: parking and the climb

Most people driving from Manali stay in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot, above the main town. The drive itself is short, but the roads up there are narrow, often one-way around the main square, and full of pedestrians and taxis. Parking is the real challenge.

  • Book a hotel with parking. This is the single most useful thing you can do. Ask the hotel whether parking is on site or a walk away, and whether you need to arrive before a certain time to get a space.
  • Know the public options. Himachal Tourism lists the McLeod Ganj parking, the Hotel Bhagsu car park and the Community Hall parking at Kotwali Bazar in lower Dharamshala. The Dharamshala Skyway site describes a multi-level car park for 125 vehicles in McLeod Ganj, run by the municipal corporation, and paid parking at its own lower station near Kotwali Bazar.
  • Do not count on the ropeway this week. The Dharamshala Skyway says it is closed for scheduled maintenance from 21 to 30 October 2026 and expects to reopen on 31 October, subject to the work being finished. Until then, the only way up from lower Dharamshala is the road.
  • Arrive early on weekends. The main square and Temple Road fill up from late morning on Saturdays and Sundays. If you reach Dharamshala late in the afternoon, it can be easier to park in the lower town and take a local taxi or bus up.

Stops worth making on the way

All of these are on or right beside the route.

  • Mandi: the natural lunch stop, roughly halfway, with plenty of places to eat and fuel up before the climb to Ghatasani.
  • Baijnath temple: a stone Shiva temple in the Nagara style built in 1204, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. It sits beside the highway in Baijnath, so a 30 minute stop costs you almost no distance.
  • Palampur tea gardens: the Kangra valley is tea country, and several gardens are close to the road around Palampur.
  • Bir: about 15 km from Jogindernagar. Too much for a single day with the full drive, but a good overnight break if you want to see the paragliders at Billing before you go on to Dharamshala.

Which car to rent and how many days

On 24 October 2026 the cars listed on Hire N Ride in Manali were:

CarFrom (per day)Details on the listing
Maruti Suzuki Jimny (Zeta or Alpha, Allgrip Pro)Rs 4,2994WD, manual, petrol, 300 km a day included, Rs 5,000 deposit
Mahindra Thar LXRs 5,3994WD, manual, petrol, 300 km a day included, Rs 5,000 deposit
Toyota FortunerRs 6,875Diesel, 300 km a day included, Rs 5,000 deposit

Prices change, so check the current rate and the included kilometres on the listing when you book. For this trip, the numbers work like this:

  • Distance: a round trip from Manali to McLeod Ganj and back is about 490 to 515 km, plus whatever you drive locally in Kangra.
  • Two days gives you 600 km on these listings, enough for the round trip but with two long days at the wheel and almost no time in Dharamshala.
  • Three days gives you 900 km: drive there, spend a full day in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, drive back. This is the plan we suggest.
  • Extra kilometres are charged at the hourly rental rate divided by 10, never less than Rs 5 or more than Rs 15 per km. A late return is charged at the hourly rate after a 30 minute grace period, capped at one day.
  • Before you leave Manali, confirm with the listing that the trip to Kangra district is allowed, note the fuel level at handover and return the car at the same level.

The Jimny is the easiest car to park and turn on McLeod Ganj's narrow lanes, and its four-wheel drive helps if you also plan high roads above Manali. The Fortuner is the most comfortable for four adults with luggage but is a big car for the climb to McLeod Ganj. If you have not rented in Manali before, read our guide to documents and security deposits for Manali car rentals before you book.

A simple three-day plan

  1. Day 1, Manali to Dharamshala. Leave at 8 am, lunch in Mandi, a short stop at Baijnath, reach Dharamshala at about 3:30 to 4 pm and park for the night.
  2. Day 2, Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj. Leave the car parked and walk or take a local taxi: the main temple complex in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu, Dharamkot and the cafes. If you want to drive, go early to the Norbulingka Institute, about 5 km from lower Dharamshala.
  3. Day 3, Dharamshala to Manali. Start by 8 am again so you clear the Pandoh gorge and Kullu in daylight. Fill the tank in Mandi or Kullu before you return the car.

With a fourth day, add an overnight in Bir on the way out or back. Our Himachal bike and car rental guide lists the other routes you can drive from Manali.
