Chandigarh to Manali by car is about 270 to 285 km via Kiratpur Sahib, Bilaspur, Mandi, Pandoh, Aut and Kullu, and in late October 2026 it is a 7 to 9 hour drive once you add food stops and the slow stretches beyond Mandi. Leave Chandigarh by 7 am and you should reach Manali before sunset, which falls at about 5:40 pm this week. Budget for the Himachal entry tax of Rs 100 for a car registered outside the state, NHAI tolls on FASTag, fuel and a rental of at least three days, because a same-week return is far more relaxed than a two-day dash.
Below: the drive stretch by stretch, current road works, this week's Kullu traffic orders, weather, costs and which car to rent. Current as of the morning of 23 October 2026.

Key takeaways
- Distance: about 270 to 285 km from central Chandigarh to Manali, depending on your start point and the line you take after Mandi.
- Time: plan 7 to 9 hours with stops. The first 150 km to Ner Chowk is quick on the four-lane road; Mandi to Kullu is the slow, unpredictable part.
- Leave by 7 am. Sunset in Manali is about 5:40 pm in the last week of October, and you want the Mandi to Aut gorge behind you well before dark.
- Costs to plan for: the car rental, the Rs 100 Himachal entry tax for an outside-registered car (rate notified in April 2026), NHAI tolls on FASTag and fuel.
- Kullu Dussehra traffic orders run from 17 October to 8 November, with town-centre diversions and no-parking zones. Pass through Kullu without stopping if you can.
- IMD Shimla expects isolated light rain on 24 and 25 October in the middle hills and dry weather on the other days this week, with no warnings.
- Book three days or more. Hire N Ride car listings in Chandigarh include 250 km a day, and the round trip alone is close to 570 km.
The Chandigarh to Manali route, stretch by stretch
The standard route leaves Chandigarh on the Kharar and Kurali road, runs north through Rupnagar to Kiratpur Sahib, enters Himachal on the Kiratpur to Ner Chowk four-lane road past Bilaspur, then follows the Beas river from Mandi through Pandoh, the Aut tunnel, Bhuntar and Kullu to Manali. The distances below come from OpenStreetMap routing from ISBT Sector 43 and are rounded. Your exact figure depends on where in the tricity you start and on any diversions on the day.
| Stretch | Approx. distance | Running total | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chandigarh to Kiratpur Sahib (via Kharar, Kurali, Rupnagar) | 72 km | 72 km | Plains highway. Leave early to clear Kharar before the morning traffic. |
| Kiratpur Sahib to Bilaspur | 30 km | 102 km | Four-lane road with tunnels. Himachal entry barrier soon after you leave Punjab. |
| Bilaspur to Ner Chowk (Sundernagar side) | 45 km | 147 km | Fast four-lane, but the posted limit is still 60 km/h. |
| Ner Chowk to Mandi | 14 km | 160 km | Town traffic and slope works near Mandi. |
| Mandi to Pandoh | 18 km | 178 km | The road enters the Beas gorge. Expect single-lane sections. |
| Pandoh to Aut | 35 km | 213 km | The slowest stretch: landslide-prone cuts, tunnels under construction, heavy vehicles. |
| Aut to Bhuntar and Kullu | 31 km | 244 km | Wider valley, faster road, festival traffic around Kullu until 28 October. |
| Kullu to Manali | 41 km | 285 km | Easy final hour along the Beas through Patlikuhal. |
Some map apps suggest a slightly shorter line of about 268 km that leaves the highway near Mandi and runs over the hills via Kataula to Bajaura. It is a narrower district road with steep bends. Unless police divert traffic that way, stay on the national highway through Pandoh and Aut, which has more traffic but is wider, better signed and easier to get help on.
How long the drive really takes in late October
Map apps often show five or six hours. Here is a more realistic split for a car leaving Chandigarh at 7 am:
- Chandigarh to Kiratpur Sahib, about 1.5 hours.
- Kiratpur Sahib to Mandi, about 2.5 hours. The four-lane road and its tunnels removed the old climb, but the Sundernagar police reminded drivers on 4 October 2026 that the official speed limit on this highway is still 60 km/h and that challans are being issued, despite social media posts claiming it had been raised. Plan your times around 60 km/h, not around what the road looks like it can take.
- Mandi to Aut, 1.5 to 2 hours. This is where the day is won or lost. Narrow sections, construction and slow trucks can turn 50 km into a long afternoon.
- Aut to Manali, about 2 hours. Faster road through Bhuntar and Kullu, with festival traffic this week and apple trucks on the valley road.
- Stops, 1 to 1.5 hours. One proper meal, a tea break and fuel.
That adds up to roughly 8 to 9 hours on a normal day, a little less if you start before dawn and stop only briefly. If you can only leave Chandigarh after lunch, do not try to push through. Stop for the night in Mandi, which is roughly the halfway point at about 160 km, and drive the gorge the next morning in daylight.
What is happening on the road right now
The Kiratpur to Manali highway is open, but it is not a finished four-lane road all the way. The monsoon damage of 2025 hit the Mandi to Kullu stretch hard, and repair and protection work is still under way along the Beas.
- Safety walls between Dwada and Manali. Dainik Jagran reported on 16 October 2026 that the new NHAI project director in Mandi had ordered the protection walls along the landslide-hit riverside sections to be speeded up, with more labour and machinery. Expect work sites, flagmen and short single-lane stretches.
- New tunnels not open yet. The Hill Wire reported on 13 October 2026 that the Dayod tunnel (about 2 km) and the Hanogi tunnel (about 400 m) between Mandi and Kullu are expected to open within about three months. Until then, traffic uses the existing road through these sections. The Jhalogi tunnel, damaged in the 2025 disaster, is being realigned with a new portal.
- Nine Mile near Mandi. This hillside has had repeated landslides in the 2023 and 2025 monsoons. A viaduct is planned, and a protection wall is being built so the current road stays open in the meantime, as News18 reported on 5 October 2026.
- No parking on the highway at night. The same Jagran report said action will be taken against vehicles parked along the highway at night. If you need a break after dark, pull into a dhaba or hotel car park, not the roadside.
Kullu Dussehra traffic this week
The International Kullu Dussehra is on, and the district magistrate's traffic order for the festival period runs from 17 October to 8 November 2026. The main points for anyone driving through to Manali, from the order as reported by EWN24 and Dainik Jagran:
- Between Dhalpur Chowk and College Gate, traffic goes by the Regional Hospital road; the Kala Kendra road is closed to vehicles.
- Vehicles coming off the four-lane towards Sarvari can use the Bailey bridge at Akhara Bazaar or the Bhutnath bridge.
- From 20 to 28 October, heavy vehicles other than special festival buses are sent along the four-lane road near Jhiri and the Gammon bridge.
- From 18 October to 8 November there is no parking and towing on six main town roads, including Mohal to Dhalpur Chowk and Dhalpur to Ramshila. The administration has set up 18 parking areas for about 2,000 vehicles.
If you are not stopping, follow the police signs and keep going. If you want to see the Dhalpur grounds, use an official parking area and walk in.
What the trip costs: rental, entry tax, tolls and fuel

How many days to book
The round trip is about 570 km before you drive anywhere around Manali. Add Solang Valley and back, a run to Naggar or a day to Kasol, and you are quickly at 700 to 800 km. With 250 km included per day, a three-day rental gives you 750 km and a four-day rental 1,000 km, which matches the trip far better than two days.
Himachal entry tax
Himachal Pradesh collects an entry tax from vehicles registered in other states at its border barriers. After protests over a proposed hike, the state notified revised rates in April 2026, and the entry tax for passenger vehicles up to 12+1 seats coming from other states was set at Rs 100, as reported by the Hindustan Times. The rate is charged per day or part of a day, and barriers have FASTag lanes. Keep the FASTag balance topped up before you leave.
Tolls and fuel
The Kiratpur to Ner Chowk four-lane road has NHAI toll plazas, charged through FASTag. Toll amounts are revised from time to time, so check the current rate on the NHAI or your FASTag app before you set out. Fill up before you enter the gorge after Mandi, and again in Manali before any trip towards Solang or the Atal Tunnel.
Which car to rent in Chandigarh for Manali
In late October the road from Chandigarh all the way to Manali is tarmac, so you do not need a four-wheel drive just to get there. Choose the car for what you plan to do after you arrive.
- Two people, Manali town and the valley: a hatchback or compact sedan such as the i20, Aura, Tiago or Polo is enough. It is easier to park in Manali and cheaper to run. If you pick a petrol/CNG car, plan on petrol in the hills unless you have checked CNG stations on your route.
- Not comfortable with a clutch on hills: take an automatic such as the Fronx AGS or Venue. Stop-start traffic around Mandi and Kullu is tiring in a manual.
- Family or group of five to seven: the Scorpio N 7-seater gives room for luggage and ground clearance for rough patches.
- Plans beyond Manali after fresh snow: a Thar 4WD is the choice if you want to drive towards Solang, the Atal Tunnel or Sissu on days when the upper roads are icy. Check the day's road status before going above Manali, as this changes quickly in late autumn.
Weather and daylight for the drive
The IMD Shimla bulletin issued at 1 pm on 22 October 2026 says a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from 24 October. It forecasts light rain at isolated places in the middle hills on 24 and 25 October, light rain or snow at isolated places in the high hills on the same days, and mainly dry weather on the other days up to 28 October, with no weather warnings. Maximum temperatures in the middle hills were 21 to 29 °C and minimums 6 to 17 °C, with temperatures expected to fall by a few degrees after the weekend.
Expect a dry road on most days, with a chance of wet patches in the Mandi to Kullu gorge on 24 and 25 October, when loose stones are likelier to fall.
Daylight is shorter than many people expect. By our calculation sunrise is about 6:30 am and sunset about 5:40 pm in Manali on 23 October, moving to about 6:37 am and 5:31 pm by 31 October.
A simple three-day plan
- Day 1, Chandigarh to Manali (about 285 km): leave at 6:30 to 7 am, breakfast before Kiratpur Sahib, lunch around Mandi or just after Pandoh, pass Kullu by mid-afternoon and check in before dark.
- Day 2, around Manali: pick one easy drive such as Solang Valley, Naggar Castle on the left bank or Old Manali and Vashisht. Our self-drive day trips from Manali in October list distances and timings for each.
- Day 3, Manali to Chandigarh: leave after an early breakfast so you clear the gorge before mid-afternoon, and allow extra time around Kullu during the festival week.
With four days you can add Kasol in the Parvati valley or the Atal Tunnel side, and with a week you can turn it into the longer loop in our Chandigarh to Shimla, Manali and Kasol road trip guide.
Mountain driving tips for this route
- Use your horn on blind bends and keep to your side of the road even when the corner looks empty.
- Give way to vehicles climbing on narrow sections; they have the harder job of restarting on a slope.
- Use a lower gear on long descents instead of riding the brakes, especially coming down towards Mandi on the return.
- Switch headlights on before every tunnel and do not overtake inside one.
- Keep your documents handy: your driving licence, the rental agreement and the car papers provided with the vehicle.

Is the Chandigarh to Manali road open in late October 2026?
Yes, the highway is open, with ongoing repair and protection work between Mandi and Kullu and festival diversions in Kullu town until 8 November. Check local news or police updates on the morning you leave.
How much is the Himachal entry tax for a car from Chandigarh?
Under the rates notified in April 2026, passenger vehicles up to 12+1 seats registered outside Himachal pay Rs 100 at the state barrier, per day or part of a day. NHAI tolls are charged separately on FASTag.
Can I do Chandigarh to Manali and back in two days?
You can, but it means about 570 km of driving in two days with almost no time in Manali. Three or four days is far more comfortable, and with 250 km included per day it also fits the kilometre allowance better.

No. The road to Manali is tarmac all the way and a hatchback or sedan is fine in dry weather. Choose an SUV or a 4WD if you are a larger group or plan to drive above Manali after snowfall.
Conclusion
Chandigarh to Manali by car is one long but very doable day: about 285 km, the first half fast on the four-lane road and the second half slow along the Beas between Mandi and Kullu. In late October 2026 the keys are an early start, patience through the repair zones after Mandi, a quick pass through Kullu during the Dussehra traffic orders and an eye on the 24 and 25 October forecast. Pay the Rs 100 entry tax, keep your FASTag topped up, rent the car for at least three days and give yourself a full day in Manali before you drive back.
