Guwahati Self-Drive Car Rental Guide: Pobitora, Kaziranga, Shillong and More

In Assam, Hire N Ride's base is Guwahati, with self-drive cars for the rhino sanctuaries, Meghalaya's capital and the silk and temple towns across the Brahmaputra. Pobitora's rhinos are about 43 km away, Sualkuchi and Hajo make an easy 83 km loop, Shillong is about 100 km up NH6, and Kaziranga is a weekend at roughly 210 to 250 km. This guide links every Guwahati drive we have published, with distances, timing and where to book.

Guwahati sits on the south bank of the Brahmaputra at the gateway to the North East, so short drives quickly reach very different landscapes: wetland grassland with rhinos, weaving villages on the north bank and the Khasi hills of Meghalaya. Most of these trips depend on daylight, which runs out early in the east, so our plans leave the city early and come back before dark. Every distance and date below comes from the linked guide, which has the full route and the sources we checked.

Rhinos: Pobitora and Kaziranga

Pobitora is the closest place to Guwahati to see one-horned rhinos. The sanctuary in Morigaon district reopened to visitors on Tuesday, 13 October, for the 2026 to 2027 season, and according to The Times of India the forest department raised the number of safari vehicles from 20 to 36 to meet demand. By map routing it is about 43 km from central Guwahati via Chandrapur, so you can see rhinos in the morning, stop in the village of Mayong after lunch and be home before dark. With Manas open since 2 October and Kaziranga since 3 October, all three of Assam's big wildlife destinations were open for the season by mid-October.

The Kaziranga weekend is the big wildlife trip. Forest department guidance puts Kohora about 210 km, around four hours, from Guwahati railway station and about 250 km, around five hours, from the airport along NH37, so plan an overnight rather than a day return. Jeep safaris for general tourists began on 3 October 2026, with entry windows of 7:30 to 10 am and 1:30 to 3 pm, and morning parties out by noon and afternoon parties by 5 pm, according to reporting of forest guidance. The guide also covers the Kohora and Bagori ranges and overnight pacing.

Shillong in a day

Guwahati to Shillong in one day sets realistic expectations. The road is about 99 to 100 km from central Guwahati via NH6, through Jorabat, Nongpoh and Umiam, but traffic, the curves after Nongpoh and weekend crowds regularly stretch it to 2.5 to 4 hours each way. From the airport, maps show about 115 to 118 km. Leave Guwahati by 6 or 7 am, keep Shillong sightseeing to two or three stops and start back by mid-afternoon so both legs stay in daylight. Umiam Lake at Barapani is the signature break on the highway; budget 20 to 40 minutes at a viewpoint. As of late September 2026 Meghalaya did not run a formal Inner Line Permit for Indian tourists, but carry photo ID for everyone and watch Meghalaya Tourism for updates on visitor registration.

Silk and temples across the river

Sualkuchi and Hajo make a gentle day loop. By map routing it is about 32 km from central Guwahati to Sualkuchi, about 10 km more to Hajo and about 41 km back to the city, roughly 83 km in all. Sualkuchi, on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, is where muga and pat silk are woven by hand, and Hajo's hills hold the 16th-century Hayagriva Madhava Temple, sacred to more than one faith. Start before 8 am to stay ahead of city traffic.

Festivals in the city

Durga Puja in Guwahati by car covers pandal hopping, Kamakhya visits and traffic during Assam's biggest festival. In 2026, Mahalaya fell on 10 October, Assamese calendars placed Maha Shashthi on 17 October and Vijaya Dashami on 21 October, and Assam's official holidays ran from 18 to 21 October, with the Cabinet adding 17 October for state employees. The Sankardev Heritage Festival at Azara covers the third Bina Chowdhury Srimanta Sankardev Heritage Festival on 8 and 9 October 2026 at Girijananda Chowdhury University, near the airport, with campus pacing and early-arrival tips; it included student competitions in Sattriya dance.

What to know at each stop

Pobitora. The sanctuary reopened with 36 safari vehicles and a new wildlife museum. Booking agencies list one-hour jeep slots from 7:30 am, with the last afternoon slot ending around 3 pm. The route runs via Noonmati and the state highway through Chandrapur. Next door, Mayong, known as the "village of magic", has a community museum of old manuscripts and relics. Nearly twice as many vehicles as before should mean more slots on busy days, including festival holidays and weekends.

Kaziranga. A fixed morning safari slot does not wait for a late taxi, which is why our guide suggests leaving Guwahati in the afternoon, reaching Kohora before dark and sleeping near the gate. Keep binoculars, rain layers and permit printouts in the car, and stay a second night if weather or sightings call for another slot.

Shillong. A day trip leaves time for a short loop, for example Ward's Lake, a viewpoint and Police Bazaar, if you treat sightseeing as a shortlist. What usually breaks a same-day plan is a late start, a long lunch, or trying to add Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak on top of a slow return. If you want estates, longer walks or a cool evening, book a night in Shillong instead.

Sualkuchi and Hajo. The route crosses the Brahmaputra to the north bank, then runs through small towns and farmland. Leaving early helps you avoid the worst traffic near the bridges, and road works change often, so trust your navigation app on the day. Expect to share the road with trucks, buses, auto-rickshaws, bicycles, school children and cattle.

Kamakhya. The temple on Nilachal Hill is a major draw through the festive season. Arrive early and be ready for queues.

Durga Puja traffic. In 2026, Guwahati's Durga Puja traffic restrictions ran from 16 to 20 October, daily from 8 am to 2 am. Some all-India calendars place the puja days a day earlier than Assamese calendars, so confirm the evening aarti or immersion plan with your chosen pandal committee.

Planning a few days

Two days: Pobitora and Mayong on day one, Sualkuchi and Hajo on day two.

Four days: add a Kaziranga overnight, with a morning and an afternoon safari slot, and return on the third or fourth day.

A week: add Shillong as a long day trip, or stay a night in Shillong to see more of Meghalaya without rushing the hill road.

Timing and daylight

The sun rises and sets early in Assam, so a 6 or 7 am start gives you the most usable daylight, especially for Shillong and Kaziranga. Safari slots at Pobitora and Kaziranga are fixed and fill quickly at the start of the season, so book them before you plan the drive. During Durga Puja, expect closures and heavy traffic around major pandals and at Kamakhya, and allow extra time on the airport road on festival mornings.

Road notes

NH6 to Shillong is a busy hill highway after Nongpoh, with trucks, curves and weekend crowds; avoid overtaking on bends and plan the return in daylight. NH37 to Kaziranga runs through Nagaon and fills with travellers in the opening weeks of the season. The north-bank roads to Sualkuchi and Hajo are quieter but narrow in the villages, so drive slowly through weaving lanes and market areas.

Which trip for which traveller?

Wildlife lovers should start with Pobitora and build up to Kaziranga. If you are in Guwahati for work and have one free day, the Sualkuchi and Hajo loop has no long mountain roads and no safari slot to chase. First-timers who mainly want a hill road and a lake view will enjoy a well-timed Shillong day.
