Manali to Kullu by car is about 41 km. Maps say 33 minutes, but plan on about an hour: the road follows the Beas river down the valley, passes through Patlikuhal, Katrain and Raison, and slows to a crawl through Kullu town and wherever highway reconstruction is under way. It is the easiest self-drive day out of Manali: a paved national highway, no 4x4 needed in dry weather, and a round trip of roughly 80 to 90 km that sits comfortably inside the 300 km a day included on our Manali car listings.
Pick up a car in Manali and you can be at the Raghunath Temple in Sultanpur before lunch. See self-drive cars in Manali, then use the route table, weather notes and day plan below to organise the drive.
Key takeaways
- Distance: 40.7 km to the centre of Kullu and 39.6 km to Sultanpur by OpenStreetMap routing. The Kullu district website quotes 45 km.
- Time: 31 to 33 minutes on a map, but plan about an hour each way and add buffer for roadworks and town traffic.
- Road status: highway reconstruction is under way between Manali and Aut, and we found no closure report for this stretch on 4 November 2026.
- Weather: the IMD Shimla bulletin forecasts dry weather across Himachal from 4 to 10 November. Kullu runs warmer than Manali in the afternoon.
- Daylight: the sun sets at about 5:26 pm in Manali on 6 November and about 5:20 pm on 15 November, so aim to start back from Kullu by 3:30 pm.
- Car: any car works. Listed Manali prices on 4 November 2026 start at Rs 4,299 a day for a Jimny, with 300 km a day included.
How far is Manali from Kullu, and how long does it really take?
The distance depends on where you call "Kullu". Routing to the town centre gives 40.7 km and 33 minutes. Routing to Sultanpur, the old part of town where the Raghunath Temple and the Dhalpur maidan sit, gives 39.6 km and 31 minutes. The Kullu district administration describes Manali as 45 km from Kullu, an older milestone-style figure, so do not be alarmed if your trip meter lands a few kilometres either side of 41.
The time is where a map misleads you. A routing engine assumes a free-flowing road, and the Kullu to Manali highway is rarely that. Trucks, tourist taxis, roadside stops and the town traffic in Kullu all add minutes to the clean figure. We would plan on one hour each way and treat a 40 minute run as a good day. If you are catching a flight at Bhuntar, double the buffer.
Route stretch by stretch
The main road runs down the right bank of the Beas, which is the side the highway uses. These are the four legs we measured, with routing distances and no-traffic times. Use them to gauge your progress rather than to promise arrival times.
| Stretch | Distance | No-traffic time | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manali to Patlikuhal | 17.4 km | 13 min | Fast, wide highway with the Beas on your side. This is also where the Naggar road branches off. |
| Patlikuhal to Katrain | 1.9 km | 2 min | A short hop into a small town where vehicles stop by the road. |
| Katrain to Raison | 6.2 km | 5 min | Riverside camps and stopping traffic, so slow down. |
| Raison to Sultanpur | 14.1 km | 12 min | Gradually busier as you enter Kullu. The last kilometres are usually the slowest. |
| Total, Manali to Sultanpur | 39.6 km | 32 min | Plan on about an hour on a normal day. |

Is the highway in good shape? Roadworks to know about
Two recent reports are worth reading before you set off. The Indian Express reported on 22 October 2026 that repair and reconstruction of the highway section between Manali and Aut, damaged in the floods of 2023 and 2025, is continuing, with the National Highways Authority of India diverting the flow of the river at a small section to carry out construction, a step that has drawn questions from activists. Dainik Jagran reported on 24 October 2026 that works worth Rs 300 to 350 crore are planned on the Kullu to Manali road, that NHAI is preparing a tunnel proposal for the most hazardous points, and that debris and falling rocks have repeatedly closed this section. The same report says that when the highway shuts, vehicles are routed onto PWD link roads.
What this means in practice: expect pockets of single-lane working, loose gravel and short waits, even in dry weather. The monsoon is the real risk season. The New Indian Express reported a highway blockage near Jhalogi in Mandi district on 11 August 2026, with schools closed in Kullu as a yellow alert was in force, a reminder that the approach roads to this valley can close quickly. In the sources we checked on 4 November 2026, we found no closure reported on the Manali to Kullu stretch itself.
Check local news or ask your hotel on the morning of the drive, and fill the tank before you leave Manali.
Where to stop between Manali and Kullu
Patlikuhal and the Naggar turn. At Patlikuhal the road to Naggar leaves the highway and crosses the Beas. By routing it is 5.2 km, about 9 minutes, and the Kullu district website puts Naggar 5 km from the Patli Kulh bridge. If you want the castle and the Roerich estate, this is your cue, and we explain the whole loop below.
Katrain. A short stop for tea or a stretch of the legs, and a handy halfway marker.
Raison. According to Wikipedia, Raison is about 12 km north of Kullu and is known for its riverside camping grounds and as a starting point for white-water rafting on the Beas. At about 1,435 m it is noticeably lower and warmer than Manali. Park well off the road.
Sultanpur and the town. This is the end of the drive and the most interesting part of the town, covered next.
Kullu town and the Raghunath Temple
Kullu is where the valley opens out, and the town sits where the Beas is joined by smaller streams. Its heart is Sultanpur, and the heart of Sultanpur is the Raghunath Temple. The Kullu district website records that Raja Jagat Singh, who ruled from 1637 to 1672, moved the capital to Sultanpur and brought an idol of Lord Raghunath from Ayodhya, after which the rulers of Kullu ruled in the name of the deity. Raghunath is regarded as the chief deity of the valley, and the same site notes that during the Kullu Dussehra the deities of the surrounding villages come to pay respects at Sultanpur. You do not need to be there for the festival, but it explains why the temple feels so central to the town.
Practical points for the visit:
- Park once and walk. The streets around the temple and bazaar are tight. Leave the car in a parking area and cover the last stretch on foot.
- Dress modestly and be ready to remove your shoes. That is standard at temples across Himachal.
- Check visiting hours. Travel directories list daily darshan hours of roughly 5 am to 9 pm, but they are not official, so confirm on the day.
The longer way: Manali to Naggar and on to Kullu
If you have the whole day, the main highway is not the only way to Kullu. From Manali, a road along the left bank of the Beas passes through Jagatsukh to Naggar, with its castle above the river and the Roerich estate nearby. Routing from Manali to Naggar gives 22.6 km and 22 minutes, and from Naggar on to Sultanpur gives 26.9 km and 27 minutes. Taken together, Manali to Naggar to Kullu is about 49 km and 48 minutes with no traffic, roughly 10 km more than the highway route.
| Route | Distance | No-traffic time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main highway, Manali to Sultanpur | 39.6 km | 31 min | Getting to Kullu quickly, then the temple and bazaar |
| Via Naggar, Manali to Sultanpur | 49.4 km | 48 min | A scenic loop with the castle and Roerich estate on the way |
| Manali to Bhuntar airport | 51.6 km | 50 min | Airport transfers, add buffer for traffic |
Our guide to the Manali left bank drive covers the Roerich estate and Naggar Castle in detail, including where to park and how long each stop takes. The two routes combine well: go down by the left bank in the morning, see Naggar, have lunch in Kullu and return by the main highway in the afternoon.
What the weather will do this week
The Indian Meteorological Department's Shimla bulletin for 4 November 2026 forecasts dry weather across Himachal from 4 to 10 November, with no thunderstorm or lightning warnings and no snowfall reported in the past 24 hours. That is the kind of week that makes the Manali to Kullu drive easy.
The temperature gap between the two towns is worth knowing before you pack. These are observed figures from the same IMD bulletin:
| Station | Minimum, 4 Nov | Maximum, 3 Nov |
|---|---|---|
| Manali | 7.1 °C | 19.6 °C |
| Bhuntar | 8.8 °C | 27.5 °C |
| Bajaura | 8.4 °C | 28.2 °C |
Source: IMD Shimla weather forecast bulletin, 4 November 2026. Bhuntar and Bajaura are the nearest reporting stations south of Kullu; the valley floor there ran about 8 °C warmer than Manali in the afternoon. In practice: wear a layer in Manali in the morning, shed it by lunch in Kullu, and put it back on before the return leg.
Daylight and when to turn back
Sunsets come early in November. Calculated sun times for Manali give sunrise at about 6:42 am and sunset at about 5:26 pm on 6 November, and sunrise at about 6:50 am and sunset at about 5:20 pm on 15 November. Kullu is a minute later at sunset. The return drive takes an hour or more, so leave Kullu by about 3:30 pm and you reach Manali in daylight. Driving the highway in the dark, with works and unlit stretches, is the one thing we would skip.
A sample day plan

| 3:30 pm | Start back to Manali on the main highway. Arrive before dusk. |

| Car | Price per day | Terms |

If you are adding snow-line drives later in the week, our November guide for Manali by car covers the 4x4 question in detail.
Beyond Kullu: Bhuntar and the airport
If you are driving someone to Bhuntar airport, it is about 9 km and 14 minutes south of Kullu by routing, or about 12 km and 20 minutes from Sultanpur. From Manali the whole run to the airport is 51.6 km and 50 minutes on a free road, so allow an hour and a half. Beyond that, our Manali to Rewalsar guide follows the highway beyond Kullu and Bhuntar to Mandi and the lake. For the whole picture of the valley, bookmark our Himachal car and bike rental guide.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Manali from Kullu by car?
About 41 km. OpenStreetMap routing gives 40.7 km to the centre of Kullu and 39.6 km to Sultanpur, where the Raghunath Temple stands. The Kullu district website describes Manali as 45 km from Kullu, so expect the odometer to read somewhere between 40 and 45 km depending on where in Kullu you stop. A return trip is roughly 80 to 90 km.
How long does Manali to Kullu take by car?
Routing software says 31 to 33 minutes without traffic, but that figure assumes an empty road. Plan on about an hour each way, and add more if the NHAI roadworks, a weekend crowd or the narrow stretch through Kullu town slows you down. Anything faster is a bonus.
Is the Manali to Kullu highway open now?
In the sources we checked on 4 November 2026 we found no report of a closure on the Manali to Kullu stretch, and the IMD Shimla bulletin forecasts dry weather across Himachal from 4 to 10 November. Reconstruction work is under way on the highway, so check local updates on the morning you drive, especially after any rain or snow.
Do I need a 4x4 for Manali to Kullu?
No. This is a paved national highway and any well-maintained car can do it in dry weather. A Jimny or Thar is useful if you plan to add Manali side trips towards the snow line, which our November guide covers, but the Kullu run itself does not need one.
Can I visit Kullu and Naggar in one day from Manali?
Yes. Driving Manali to Naggar and on to Sultanpur by routing software is about 49 km, against about 40 km on the main highway, so the Naggar loop costs roughly 10 km extra. Start by 9 am, see the castle in the morning, reach Raghunath Temple by lunch and be back on the highway by 3:30 pm so you are in Manali before sunset.
Where is the Raghunath Temple and what is its history?
It stands at Sultanpur, in Kullu town. According to the Kullu district website, Raja Jagat Singh, who ruled from 1637 to 1672, moved the capital to Sultanpur and installed an idol of Lord Raghunath brought from Ayodhya, after which the rulers governed in the deity's name. Travel directories list daily darshan hours of roughly 5 am to 9 pm, but confirm locally before you plan around them.
How many kilometres are included when I rent a car in Manali?
The listings we checked on 4 November 2026 include 300 km a day. A Manali to Kullu and back trip is around 80 to 90 km, so even with the Naggar loop you stay well inside the limit. Extra kilometres on the Jimny listing are charged at Rs 16 a km and on the Fortuner listing at Rs 20 a km.
Conclusion
Manali to Kullu by car is a short, straightforward drive of about 41 km, and the best way to treat it is as a half-day trip with plenty of margin rather than a 33 minute dash. Leave in the morning, stop at Raison, see the Raghunath Temple in Sultanpur, and be on the road back by mid-afternoon. If you want a longer day, add Naggar. Either way, you can start in the town where our cars are based.
