Ujjain is the easiest pilgrimage drive you can make from Indore. The Mahakaleshwar temple is about 55 km away by road, the route is a straight run north on the Indore–Ujjain highway, and you can be back home the same day. Yet many first-timers get the timing wrong, arriving at noon into long queues or leaving at 3 am for a Bhasma Aarti whose gates closed hours earlier.
The fix is simple. Decide which part of Mahakal's day you want to see, then work your departure backwards from it. This guide sets out three timings that work, explains how the temple's online booking works in 2026, and covers the road itself, which is in the middle of a six-lane upgrade this autumn. If you are booking a self-drive car rental in Indore for the trip, it also covers what to check before you pick up the keys.
Key Takeaways
- The distance: our route check gives about 56 km from Rajwada, 54 km from Vijay Nagar Square and 61 km from Indore airport to the Mahakaleshwar temple. Allow an hour to an hour and a half.
- Pick your aarti first: the Bhasma Aarti starts at 4 am but you report in the small hours, the Sandhya Aarti is at about 6 to 7 pm, and ordinary darshan runs through the day.
- Book online only: since April 2026, Bhasma Aarti permits are issued only on the temple's official website. Regular slots open on the 1st of the previous month at 8 am, and Tatkal slots open at 8 am the day before.
- Expect roadworks: the Indore–Ujjain six-lane upgrade was reported about 80% complete in August 2026, with January 2027 as the target for opening.
- Avoid the peaks: Navratri (11–19 October 2026), Dussehra on 20 October, Mondays and weekends tend to be busiest.
- Book a reviewed host car on the Indore car rental page.
Why timing matters more than distance
Mahakaleshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the shrines held most sacred to Shiva. The Ujjain district administration notes that the lingam here faces south, which is unique among the twelve. The temple's own website puts daily visitors at more than 1,50,000. When the 900-metre Shri Mahakal Lok corridor opened on 11 October 2022, PIB said the project expected annual footfall, then about 1.5 crore, to double.
The experience changes completely across the day. The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti needs a permit and a night drive. Midday darshan is simplest but often most crowded. Evenings bring the Sandhya Aarti and the Mahakal Lok lit up. With your own car you can choose any of these, but choose before you leave Indore.
The road from Indore to Ujjain today
Most drives follow the Indore–Ujjain road (SH 59) north through Sanwer. Here is what our route check (OpenStreetMap routing) gives to the Mahakaleshwar temple:
- Vijay Nagar Square: about 54 km
- Rajwada: about 56 km
- Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport: about 61 km
The Ujjain district website puts the airport about 53 km from the city. On a clear road the drive takes about an hour, but an August 2026 report put it at 1.5 to 2 hours at busy times.
The six-lane upgrade
The road is being widened from four lanes to six ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh in 2028. According to a News24 report from August 2026, the 46 km stretch runs from Arvindo Hospital in Indore to the Hari Phatak overbridge in Ujjain. The project was about 80% complete, with three flyovers, eight underpasses and eight junctions, and January 2027 as the target for opening to traffic. Once finished, the drive is expected to take 35 to 40 minutes.
Until then, expect lane shifts and slower sections around bridges and junctions. Keep a safe gap from trucks and take extra care at night, when work zones are harder to read.
The Lavkush Square double-decker bridge
On the Indore side, the new double-decker bridge at Lavkush Square carries Ujjain-bound traffic over the metro line. Indore Talk reported on 6 October 2026 that its first three-lane arm opened about two months earlier and the second was expected to open the following week, subject to approval. It ends near Arvindo Hospital, where the six-lane section begins.
The Hire N Ride Indore page also notes that the Indore–Ujjain road has toll plazas. Ask your host whether the car's FASTag is active, and carry some cash just in case.
Three ways to time the day
1. The Bhasma Aarti: leave around midnight
The temple's website says the Bhasma Aarti is performed every day at 4 am and is the first aarti of the day. You don't arrive at 4, though. Recent travel guides give a reporting window of roughly 1 am to 2:30 am, and the Times of India advises arriving at least 30 to 40 minutes early because late entry is usually refused once the ritual begins. Always go by the reporting time printed on your pass.
Working backwards from that, plan to leave Indore at about midnight. That gives you an hour for the drive, time to park and walk to the gate, and a margin for roadworks. The aarti finishes around sunrise, which falls at about 6:20 am in early October and 6:31 am by 31 October. You can then have breakfast in Ujjain and visit the other temples before driving back.
This is a sleepless night, so be honest about fatigue. Don't drive straight back if you have been awake since the previous morning: rest, swap drivers or book a room. The temple committee runs two guest houses, Pt. Suryanarayan Vyas Atithi Niwas and Shri Mahakaleshwar Atithi Niwas, bookable on its website.
How Bhasma Aarti booking works in 2026
The rules changed this year. In April 2026, the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee closed the offline counter that used to issue about 300 permits a day. Those permits became an online Tatkal quota, Dainik Jagran reported. As of October 2026, the temple website says:
- Regular booking opens on the 1st of the previous month at 8 am. For example, July slots open on 1 June. November slots therefore opened on 1 October.
- Tatkal booking opens at 8 am the day before the date you want, on a first-come, first-served basis. Dainik Jagran reported a fee of ₹200 per person.
Book only on the official website, shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in, and ignore agents who offer passes. Carry the same original photo ID you used to book, and keep a printed copy of the pass. The Times of India also notes a traditional dress code for the sanctum: a dhoti for men and a saree for women.
2. Morning darshan: back in Indore by lunch
If you don't need the Bhasma Aarti, the simplest plan is the one the Hire N Ride Indore page suggests: leave early, do your darshan and be back by lunch. Leaving Indore at about 6 am puts you in Ujjain by 7 to 7:30, before the midday rush. The temple also sells a Sheeghra Darshan pass on its website if you want a shorter queue.
3. Evening: Mahakal Lok, the Sandhya Aarti and Ram Ghat
For an afternoon start, leave Indore at about 2 pm and spend the late afternoon in the Mahakal Lok corridor. The corridor has 108 carved sandstone pillars and murals telling stories from the Shiva Purana, set around the restored Rudra Sagar lake. The temple website says the Sandhya Aarti takes place at about 6 to 7 pm, with online booking opening at 12 noon each day. Dainik Jagran reported a ₹250 fee for seated entry, while the moving chalit darshan stays free.
Sunset falls at about 6:09 pm in early October and 5:50 pm by the end of the month. The temple website also lists a water-screen projection and fountain show at Rudra Sagar every evening at 8 pm. If you stay for it, you will drive home in the dark, so make sure the driver is rested.
Parking near the temple
Don't try to drive right up to Mahakal. On busy days, Ujjain traffic police close the temple area to vehicles and send visitors to designated car parks. For the royal procession on 7 September 2026, Dainik Bhaskar reported that vehicles from Indore were directed to the Wakadkar, Mannat Garden and Karkraj car parks. For Mahashivratri 2026, police said cars from Indore would use lots at the Engineering College, Mannat Garden and behind Hotel Imperial, with buses on to Karkraj and then a walk.
Those were festival plans, so details vary. On an ordinary day, follow police signs to the nearest designated lot and note its name. Police have warned that cars parked elsewhere may face action. Keep valuables out of sight.
Beyond Mahakal: a short temple loop by car
Once you have done darshan, a car makes it easy to see Ujjain's other well-known shrines without haggling for autos. The temple committee's website describes each of these:
- Bada Ganesh temple: next to Mahakal, with a large Ganesh idol and a Panchmukhi Hanuman. Go on foot.
- Harsiddhi temple: revered as one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of Sati and close to Mahakal. Expect long queues during Navratri.
- Ram Ghat: on the Shipra, which surrounds Ujjain on three sides. It is about 2 km from Mahakal by road, so it is often easier to walk than to move the car.
- Kal Bhairav temple: about 6 km north of Mahakal by road. The temple is mentioned in the Skanda Purana and is known for its unusual offering of liquor to the deity.
- Chintaman Ganesh: about 7 km south-west of Mahakal, with ancient idols of three forms of Ganesh.
A sensible loop is Mahakal, Bada Ganesh, Harsiddhi and Ram Ghat on foot from one car park, then a short drive to Kal Bhairav, about 61 km from Rajwada. Add Chintaman Ganesh if you have time; it is about 60 km from there back to Rajwada.
With an extra day, Indore's other Jyotirlinga drive is Omkareshwar on the Narmada; see our Omkareshwar self-drive guide, or our Mandu heritage day for a change from temples. Most families find Ujjain and Omkareshwar too much for one day.
October dates to plan around
- Navratri, 11–19 October 2026: Harsiddhi is one of the city's main Navratri temples, so expect heavy crowds and traffic on the Indore road. Unless you are going for Navratri itself, go before 11 October or after the festival.
- Dussehra, 20 October: a public holiday, so expect busier roads.
- Mondays and weekends: Monday is Shiva's day, and booking guides say Bhasma Aarti slots for weekends and Mondays go fastest. A midweek visit is a safer bet.
- Light: sunrise is at about 6:20 am in early October and 6:31 am by 31 October. Sunset is at about 6:09 pm in early October and 5:50 pm by month's end.
Further ahead, Simhastha 2028 is scheduled for 27 March to 27 May 2028, with the main Shahi Snan days on 9 April, 23 April and 8 May, according to dates announced by the state. This year's roadworks are largely preparation for it.
Choosing your self-drive car rental in Indore
Hire N Ride works like Airbnb for vehicles. Local hosts list their cars on a professional profile, and every completed trip adds to their reviews. Because more reviews bring more bookings, hosts have a real reason to keep their cars clean, serviced and ready on time. You can read what earlier renters said about a particular car and host before you book.
For Ujjain, any well-kept hatchback or sedan is fine, as the road is flat and paved. Families with elderly relatives may prefer a larger car with easy entry.
What you need, according to the Hire N Ride Indore page:
- A valid four-wheeler driving licence held for at least one year. The minimum age is 21.
- A quick digital KYC using your driving licence and Aadhaar card when you book.
- Outstation trips to Ujjain are allowed. Standard daily kilometre limits apply, so check the included km and the rate beyond them in your booking confirmation.
Before you leave, photograph the car, check tyres and lights, confirm the FASTag and save the host's number. For a midnight start, arrange an evening pickup.
Own a car in Indore? Put it to work
Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar and Mandu keep self-drive cars busy from Indore through the cooler months, and Simhastha 2028 will bring visitors from across the country. As a Hire N Ride host, you build a professional profile, collect reviews and grow your bookings. Hire N Ride manages the business side, including compliance and reminders:
- Vehicle surveys, so the car's condition is recorded before and after each trip
- GPS management
- Insurance renewal reminders
- PUC certificate tracking
- RC paperwork
- Permit expiry reminders
- Servicing schedules, so brakes, tyres and lights are ready for night drives and highway runs
