For Kerala, Hire N Ride's base is Cochin (Kochi), with both self-drive cars and bikes. By bike you can reach Cherai Beach, the Kadamakkudy islands, Hill Palace at Tripunithura and the Muziris heritage trail; by car, Athirappilly Falls, Alleppey's backwaters, Thattekad, Vagamon and an overnight in Munnar are all within reach. This guide links every Cochin route we have published, grouped by trip length, with distances, timing and where to book.
Cochin works well as a single base because Kerala's coast, backwaters and Western Ghats all start within a couple of hours of the city. Short rides stay on the flat coastal plain and islands, while the hill drives east climb hairpin roads, so the choice between a bike and a car usually depends on how far inland you are going. Every distance below comes from the linked guide, which has the full route, timings and the sources we checked.
Getting started in Cochin
Our introduction to self-drive car rental in Kochi covers airport pickup and why driving yourself suits a Kerala road trip. For seasonal planning, the October car day-trip guide groups Fort Kochi, Cherai, Alleppey and Athirappilly, and the October bike day-ride guide lays out four loops: Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, Athirappilly, Cherai and the climb to Munnar. Our bike guide notes that October days are warm, around 29 to 31°C, with humid nights and short showers still possible, so ride early and pack a light rain jacket.
Short rides by bike
Cherai Beach by bike is an easy coastal half day on Vypin Island, about 25 to 40 km depending on whether you use the Goshree bridges or the ferry. Closer still, the Kadamakkudy ride takes you about 13 km from Edappally via Varapuzha to a cluster of fourteen islands at the northern edge of the city, with Pokkali paddy fields, prawn farms, mangroves and herons. Wikipedia calls it the "Kuttanad of Kochi". For a quiet afternoon, Hill Palace at Tripunithura has forty-nine buildings, lawns, a deer park and Kerala's largest archaeological museum; note that it is closed on Mondays. History lovers should ride the Muziris trail north of Cochin, an easy loop of about 78 km past the synagogues of Paravur and Chendamangalam, the Paliam heritage sites and Kottappuram Fort, near the area where historians place the ancient port of Muziris that traded pepper with Rome.
Day drives by car
Athirappilly Falls rewards an early start: Incredible India puts it about 70 km from Kochi, and leaving by 7 am gets you to the falls around 9, after the 8 am opening and before most visitors. Entry passes are sold online up to 60 days ahead by the Vazhachal Forest Division. The Alleppey drive runs about 50 to 65 km south on NH66 to the backwaters, with houseboat day windows and still time to return to Ernakulam before dinner. For birds, Thattekad on the Periyar is a small patch of lowland forest that the ornithologist Salim Ali described as the richest bird habitat in peninsular India, paired with the Bhoothathankettu dam. Our Vagamon day covers the pine forest, meadows and three hilltop shrines about 102 km from MG Road, roughly three hours each way with breaks; the guide notes the glass bridge was still closed for strengthening work in October 2026.
Overnight: Munnar
Munnar is the trip most people want and the one most often rushed. Our Cochin to Munnar weekend plan puts it at roughly 130 km via NH85, about 3.5 to 5 hours one way depending on traffic, road work and photo stops. The guide recommends leaving Cochin mid-morning, staying overnight in Munnar and returning on day two after a park or estate loop, rather than a same-day round trip.
What to know at each stop
Cherai and Vypin. Cherai sits on Vypin Island, commonly described as about 25 km from Fort Kochi and roughly 30 km from central Kochi. You can take the Goshree bridges from mainland Ernakulam, about 25 to 45 minutes in light traffic, or the roughly 10-minute Fort Kochi to Vypin ferry followed by about 20 km of island coastal road. Kochi's sunset falls a little after 6 pm in October, so build in a return buffer.
Kadamakkudy. The route runs north on NH 66 from Edappally to the Varapuzha bridge, then on local roads to Valiya Kadamakkudy: about 13 km from Edappally, 16 km from Kaloor and 20 km from Ernakulam Junction. Go early for birds and soft light, or late afternoon for the sunset over the water.
Hill Palace. Ernakulam district pages place it about 12 to 14 km from the city, and Tripunithura railway station is about 2 km away. Built from 1865 as the Cochin Maharaja's administrative seat, its 49 buildings spread across roughly 52 to 54 acres, and the Kerala Department of Archaeology lists visiting hours of roughly 9 am to 1 pm and 2 to 5 pm.
Muziris. On 4 October 2026 water taxis and kayaks were launched under the Muziris Heritage Project, and kayaking and canoeing opened to the public on the Kottappuram and Paravur waterfronts on 18 October, which gives the trail a new on-water stop.
Athirappilly and Vazhachal. Kerala Tourism says Vazhachal is less than 5 km from Athirappilly, so the two falls fit into one morning.
Thattekad. The sanctuary is roughly 62 km from central Cochin by road and covers only about 25 sq km, yet it holds both forest and water birds. Bhoothathankettu dam is about 9 km away.
Munnar road. NH85 runs through Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam, Neriamangalam and Adimali, climbing from sea level into the High Ranges at around 1,500 to 1,600 metres. Our guide warns that the Neriamangalam to Adimali stretch saw landslips and unfinished widening work during the 2026 monsoon, so drive it in daylight and check local news first.
Dates for travellers flying in
Cochin International Airport's winter schedule runs from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027, with more weekly flights than the summer roster, and traffic on the NH66 approaches to the airport grows as Kerala's peak season gathers pace. If you are landing late in the month, book your car before you fly and leave a buffer for airport-area traffic.

Planning a few days
Two days: ride Fort Kochi and Mattancherry on the first morning and Kadamakkudy at sunset, then drive to Athirappilly early on day two.
Four days: add Cherai or the Muziris trail on a bike and an Alleppey backwater day by car.
A week: add the Munnar overnight and Vagamon or Thattekad on separate days.
Same-day or overnight?
A useful rule from our guides: anything under about 75 km each way, such as Athirappilly, Alleppey or Thattekad, works as a day trip if you leave early. Vagamon, at about 102 km with a hairpin climb at the end, is a long but manageable day. Munnar is different. A same-day out-and-back of roughly 260 km plus sightseeing usually means leaving before dawn and returning after dark, exactly when mist, wet patches and fatigue add up, which is why we recommend a night there.
Weather and timing
After the southwest monsoon eases, Kochi's coastal air turns rideable again, but humidity stays high and short showers can still roll through in October. Start rides early, keep a rain layer handy and avoid the hill roads to Munnar and Vagamon in heavy rain. At Athirappilly, check gate times and forest road rules in our guide; at Thattekad, arrive early, when birds are most active.
Questions travellers ask
Can I do Munnar as a day trip from Cochin?
It is possible but rushed. At about 130 km and 3.5 to 5 hours each way, our guide recommends an overnight stay.
Is a scooter enough for Cherai and Fort Kochi?
Yes. Both are on flat coastal roads, and a scooter makes parking near the beach and the heritage lanes easier.
Do I need to book Athirappilly in advance?
Passes can be booked online up to 60 days ahead through the Vazhachal Forest Division, which saves time at the gate.
