Bangalore's Dussehra long weekend in 2026 falls across Friday 17 October through Monday 20 October. Plenty of people will spend that break on the expressway to Mysuru for the palace illuminations and the Jamboo Savari. That is a fine trip—we have already written a separate Bangalore to Mysuru Dasara self-drive plan—but it is not the only way to use four clear days.
This guide is for a different kind of long weekend: an overnight (or two-night) self-drive northwest to Hampi, the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage site. You go for stone chariots, pillared halls, river ghats and hills of stacked granite, not for a festival parade. With car rental in Bangalore on Hire N Ride, you leave on your own clock, overnight near the ruins, and come back when the city traffic has thinned.
Key Takeaways
- Hampi is roughly 341 km from central Bangalore by OSRM routing (about 326 km if you measure to Hosapete/Hospet). Plan on five to seven hours each way once you add fuel stops, food and traffic.
- The Dussehra weekend of 17–20 October 2026 is a long-weekend travel window to the UNESCO ruins—not a repeat of Mysuru Dasara coverage.
- Core stops: Virupaksha Temple and Hampi Bazaar, Hemakuta Hill, Vittala Temple with the stone chariot, Achyutaraya and riverside paths along the Tungabhadra.
- Book a self-drive car on the Bangalore car rental page. If you own a car in the city, you can list it on Hire N Ride and earn when hosts and guests need a weekend vehicle.
- Hosts should keep insurance, PUC, RC and service reminders current before a long highway trip; Hire N Ride is built to help with those compliance nudges.
- Do not invent tight day-return timing. Hampi rewards a sunset and a sunrise. Leave Friday evening or Saturday dawn; return Sunday evening or Monday morning.
Why Hampi, Not Another Festival Queue
Hampi sits on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra in Ballari district. For two centuries it was the ceremonial and commercial heart of Vijayanagara. What remains is a spread of temples, gateways, markets, baths and boulder hills that the Archaeological Survey of India and UNESCO protect as the Group of Monuments at Hampi. Karnataka Tourism's own Hampi page is a useful official overview of the circuits.
The point of a self-drive weekend here is space and light. You park once near your stay, walk and climb between clusters, and move the car only when the next cluster is too far on foot. That is a different rhythm from standing in a Dasara crowd. If you already did a short heritage day north of Bangalore—our Lepakshi hanging-pillar drive is about a hundred kilometres—Hampi is the multi-day version in the same cultural arc, only farther and richer.
How Far Is Hampi from Bangalore?
Using OSRM driving routes from central Bangalore (near MG Road coordinates) to the Hampi ruins area, the distance is about 341 km and a little over four hours of pure driving time in ideal conditions. Routing to Hosapete, the nearest large town and railhead, is about 326 km and roughly four hours. Real trips take longer. Add city exit traffic, fuel, a meal, and a careful pace on the last stretch into the heritage zone.
Most drivers leave Bangalore on NH 48 / the Tumakuru side, continue toward Chitradurga and then cut across toward Hosapete before the final run into Hampi. Exact junction names change with highway upgrades, so load a live map the morning you leave and do not treat any blog's turn-by-turn as gospel. What does not change is the scale: this is an overnight highway trip, not a city half-day like Savandurga west of Magadi.
Compare that with Coorg on a shorter long weekend—our earlier note on whether Coorg is worth a Gandhi Jayanti self-drive from Bangalore sat in the 250–270 km band. Hampi asks for more road time and gives you a full ruined city in return.
A Sensible Dussehra Weekend Shape (17–20 Oct 2026)
Option A — Two nights (best)
- Friday evening: Leave Bangalore after work, overnight in Hosapete or Hampi.
- Saturday: Virupaksha, Hemakuta, bazaar, riverside walk; sunset from a hill.
- Sunday: Vittala and the stone chariot, royal enclosure / Zenana area if open, second sunset.
- Monday: Easy morning, drive back to Bangalore before evening traffic peaks.
Option B — One night (tight but possible)
- Saturday dawn: Leave Bangalore very early; reach Hampi by late morning.
- Saturday afternoon–Sunday morning: Two main clusters only; do not try to "finish" Hampi.
- Sunday afternoon: Drive back; expect a late arrival.
Ticket counters, monument open hours and photography rules are set by ASI and local authorities and can change around holidays. Check the Archaeological Survey of India notices and the on-ground boards when you arrive. We do not list ticket prices here because they go stale quickly.
What to See Without Rushing
Virupaksha and Hemakuta
Start at Virupaksha Temple in Hampi village. The gopuram is the landmark you will have seen in photographs; the bazaar street in front of it still reads as a processional avenue even in ruin. Climb Hemakuta Hill nearby for shrines, open granite sheets and a wide view back over the village and the river bend. Go early or late; midday on bare rock is harsh.
Vittala and the stone chariot
The Vittala Temple complex holds the iconic stone chariot and the musical pillars of the mahamandapa. It sits a bit away from the village core, so either walk the riverside path if you have the heat tolerance or drive and park at the authorised lot. Stay on marked paths; climbing fragile carvings is how monuments lose the details that made the trip worth it.
River, boulders and the second look
Hampi's character is as much geology as architecture. Granite tors stack into hills; palms and the Tungabhadra cut green lines through the ochre. A second evening on Matanga or another open hill often beats racing to a fifth temple name on your list.
Driving and Car Tips for the Weekend
- Start with a full tank in Bangalore and top up in a large town before the last stretch. Do not rely on finding a pump open at odd hours near the monuments.
- Keep water, paper maps offline, and a power bank in the cabin. Mobile data can thin between highway stretches and riverine pockets.
- Park only in authorised lots. Village lanes near Virupaksha fill quickly on holiday weekends.
- Respect monument rules on drones, tripods and flash. When in doubt, ask the ASI attendant.
- Night driving: the return to Bangalore on Sunday or Monday can run late. Share live location with family, take a tea break, and do not push fatigue.
Hire N Ride is a marketplace, not a single fleet brand. You book a host's car the way you would book a stay on a home platform: profiles, reviews and clear trip terms. Platforms such as Zoomcar are another way people hire cars in Indian cities; pick the model that fits your dates and documents. What matters for Hampi is a reliable highway car, confirmed pickup time, and enough kilometres in the package for a ~680 km round trip plus local hops.
A Short Note for Bangalore Hosts
Long-weekend demand cuts both ways. Guests need cars that can handle a Karnataka highway run; hosts need paperwork that will not fail a police check. Before you list or hand over a car for a Hampi-bound booking, confirm that insurance, PUC, RC and any permit dates are current, and that servicing is not overdue. Hire N Ride is built to help hosts run that side of the business—reminders and compliance included—so a guest's stone-chariot weekend does not turn into a roadside argument about documents.
If your car sits idle in Bangalore from Friday to Monday, this is exactly the kind of trip that can put it to work. List your vehicle with honest photos, kilometre rules that fit a 300-plus km one-way drive, and clear fuel policy.
What to Pack (and What to Leave)
- Light cotton clothing, a hat, sunscreen and sturdy shoes with grip for granite.
- A small daypack for water and a dry bag if you walk near the river.
- Cash for small parking or local snacks where UPI is patchy; cards for hotel and fuel in town.
- Leave drones and bulky lighting at home unless you already hold the right permissions.
Conclusion
The 17–20 October 2026 Dussehra break gives Bangalore a rare four-day pocket. Mysuru will take the festival crowd. Hampi will take the people who want stone wheels, river light and hills of bare granite. Book early on the car rental in Bangalore page, plan one or two nights, and treat the highway hours as part of the trip rather than dead time. When you are ready to host the next guest who asks for the same weekend, list your vehicle on Hire N Ride and keep the compliance basics tight.
